“A US strike against North Korea may go against common logic, but when a country is governed by propaganda – and the United States are going through such a period – political decisions go beyond rational logic, and there we can have consequences that are hard to foresee.”
–Russian Major General Pavel Zolotarev
Two days ago President Trump threatened to send “fire and fury like the world has never seen” raining down upon North Korea. The following day he said that that warning may not have been “tough enough.” Now, on Friday, he is tweeting that the US is “locked and loaded” for an attack.
Also it is being reported today that US and South Korean troops are set to hold the “Ulchi-Freedom Guardian” war games along the North Korean border on August 21-31. The war games will “involve tens of thousands of American and South Korean troops on the ground and in the sea and air,” according to one report.
The Russian general quoted above has it right. The US is “governed by propaganda.” And it is leading us down a very dangerous path.
People might want to check out the website Women Cross the DMZ. Basically it is a group of international women activists, much like the Women’s Boat to Gaza, I gather, who are working to bring about peace in Korea (h/t Robert Stiver). In an article published August 2 in the New York Times, one of its members, Christine Ahn comments that in the present atmosphere “multiple barriers — language, culture and ideology — make misunderstanding and dangerous miscalculations more likely, paving the way for conflict.”
This is true, and Trump obviously is not helping things with his inflammatory rhetoric.
RT is now reporting that China is vowing to prevent a US or South Korean “first strike” against North Korea, should one be launched. On the other hand, the Chinese will remain “neutral” should Pyongyang launch missiles against US targets first. The article cites a report in a Chinese state-run news site:
Beijing should make it clear that “if North Korea launches missiles that threaten US soil first and the US retaliates, China will stay neutral,” the Global Times wrote.
But if the US and its ally South Korea take on Pyongyang and try to “overthrow the North Korean regime and change the political pattern of the Korean Peninsula, China will prevent them from doing so,” the paper stressed.
So China is threatening to intervene if the US launches a “preemptive” attack up the North. In other words, this could easily escalate into World War III if the Trump administration does something foolish.
The report also includes a quote from Major General Zolotarev:
“The North Korean military may inflict significant damage to US forces during a conventional conflict. Though their equipment is far behind the American assets, their combat readiness and military morale are much higher,” he said.
I noted in a post yesterday that all the talk about threats by North Korea to attack Guam may be fake news, this based upon an article by Jim Stone who speculates to that effect. Today, I did manage to make my way to the North Korean state-run news site that Stone mentions. It is called Rodong.Rep and you can find it here.
Like Stone, I was unable to find anything about the North Korean leadership threatening to attack Guam. But they do have an article here about a mass rally and demonstration held in Pyongyang on Wednesday. Here is a quote from it, that features an official government statement which, we are told, was read aloud at the rally:
The DPRK government statement was read out by Ri Su Yong, member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK), member of the State Affairs Commission of the DPRK and vice-chairman of the C.C., WPK.
Kim Ki Nam, member of the Political Bureau of the C.C., WPK, member of the State Affairs Commission of the DPRK and vice-chairman of the WPK Central Committee, addressed the meeting.
Noting that the U.S. and its vassal forces recently cooked up “sanctions resolution” over the DPRK’s test-launch of ICBM by abusing the name of the UN again, the speaker condemned it as an unprecedented unethical deed and an intolerable hideous state terrorism aimed to completely violate the DPRK’s sovereignty and rights to existence and development.
The U.S., the most shameless gangster-like state, framed up the “sanctions resolution” with dastards acting as voting machine without any principle. This is no more than desperate efforts of those frightened at the might of the DPRK which rose to the high strategic position as a nuclear power of Juche and world-level military power.
The DPRK’s access to the strongest nukes and rockets is a legitimate step to defend the destiny of the country and nation and ensure the right to the independent development. The imperialistic U.S. styling itself as the “only superpower in the world” would cook up such dirty criminal documents, daring not to provoke the DPRK though it mobilize all its vassal forces. Such reality clearly proves that our Party’s line of simultaneously developing the two fronts is the eternal banner and invincible weapon for peace and prosperity.
The hostile forces have so far cooked up UN “sanctions resolutions” several times, faulting the DPRK’s exercise of just rights. But any sanctions and pressure could not browbeat the DPRK but hardened its independent faith and resulted in increasing the might of its self-development.
We will further increase the might of justice to wipe out the source of all injustice and evils now that the gangster-like acts of the U.S. have reached the height, and clearly show what miserable and wretched fate those standing in the way of the DPRK will have to face.
The neighboring countries which blindly followed the U.S. as its puppets, away with elementary justice and etiquettes, will never be able to evade the responsibility for having coiled up the situation on the Korean peninsula and endangered peace and security in the region.
I think it’s pretty significant that there’s nothing mentioned above, or anywhere else in the article, about attacking Guam. So I’m guessing most likely the whole thing was a fake news story made up by the mainstream media.
Also, people might want to consider this, from the Women Cross the DMZ website:
After nearly 4 million people, mostly Korean civilians, were killed during the 1950–53 Korean War, fighting was halted when North Korea, China, and the United States representing the UN Command signed a ceasefire agreement. They promised within three months to sign a peace treaty; over 60 years later, we’re still waiting.
Why is it we still don’t have a peace treaty now 64 years later? Instead of threatening to unleash “fire and fury” upon the North Koreans, why doesn’t Trump call up Kim Jong-un and initiate a dialogue? If a peace treaty were signed, US troops, who have been stationed in South Korea for the past six-plus decades, would be able to come home. This would be the most logical thing to do.
But of course, the US is “governed by propaganda” so logic is thrown out the window.
